Dr Toqeer Aslam, our founder, established and funded Zahida Welfare Hospital and its umbrella organisation, Wishing Well Foundation, to help the poor, sick and needy in and
around Lahore, Pakistan.
Dr Aslam was born in Lahore, Pakistan and moved to the United Kingdom with his parents, Mian Mohammad Aslam and Zahida Naseem, at the age of 6.
He completed his schooling in Leeds and qualified as a doctor from Bristol University in 1981. Following further training, he became a General Practitioner in Chatham, Kent.
Dr Aslam has a passion for philanthropy. He started by establishing Wishing Well Charity in 1983, a UK registered charity, whose first project was to establish a hospice in Maidstone, Kent.
Later, in 1988, Wishing Well lent its name and support to Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital for its Wishing Well Appeal. The biggest and most successful appeal in UK history.
Having established and lead this charity for a number of years, Dr Aslam resigned from his position as Chairman in order to focus on other commitments. The charity continues to operate in the UK,
supporting other causes.
In 2000, Dr Aslam started Zahida Welfare Dispensary, named after his mother Zahida, providing GP type services. In 2009, following a major up-scaling of the operation and capacity,
Zahida Welfare Hospital, a now 50 bedded non-profit making welfare hospital was established with the aim of providing heavily subsidised medical facilities to the poor and needy in Lahore.
In 2016, to support the growing scale of the charity work, an umbrella charity, Wishing Well Foundation, was registered in Pakistan. Zahida Welfare Hospital is now a subsidiary and beneficiary of Wishing
Well Foundation. The current facilities at the hospital are struggling to cope with the demand and therefore Dr Aslam is planning to undertake a project of extension and expansion.
